The Dirt On Us: Simple. Successful. Sustainable.
Let’s focus on that third word for a minute. There are a lot of companies out there that claim to offer ‘sustainable’ products. Many of these products, however, are produced by unconventional means that are just as harmful to the planet or they just plain don’t work. We don’t think it’s right to call something ‘clean’ if you’re just sweeping Dirt under the rug. Dirt, after all, should be used for growing gardens and promoting successful plants!
Often times developing a new product on a large scale requires a sizable supply of a certain resource. Instead of looking to what potential ingredients we could extract from places we probably shouldn’t be extracting them from, we instead looked at what was already available. A whole bunch of testing later, we arrived at BogBits, our proprietary secret sauce that make our soil products so effective. BogBits are comprised of partially petrified peat from North American peat bogs. In years past, this by-product of peat moss harvest would have simply been discarded, or in special circumstances, used to pave the roads trucks use to get in and out of peat bogs. These bits, however, have allowed us to create a rich, fluffy Soil Conditioner and Potting Mix with porosity that puts the competition to shame.
To sum things up, we’re doing beautiful, completely non-toxic (chemical free) things with a recycled by-product called BogBits.
A Healthy Meal for Plants
Our Good Dirt Plant Food comes from a plant in Texas, which is certified by the town of Sherman as a zero waste discharge manufacturing facility.
Our Plant Food is based on oilseed extract, – a naturally occurring product. The oilseed extract we receive is a by-product from manufacturers that mill seeds to extract food and feed ingredients.
We’ve also found some valuable uses for the waste that is produced during the manufacturing process,. Filter sludge, which results from plant food manufacturing, is pressed to remove as much liquid phase as possible. The extracted liquid is re-sold as a registered 1-1-1 plant food product in the state of Texas. Material is then offered to local growers and cattlemen as livestock feed.
Respect the Earth for Peat’s Sake!
All peat moss used in GOOD DIRT products comes from responsibly managed peat lands in Canada.
